FONTANA, CALIFORNIA — A Sheriff deputy shot at a car from a helicopter, successfully ending a car chase, but sparking a debate about the use of helicopter gunfire.

On Friday, police efforts to pull over the suspect of a home-invasion robbery spiraled into a high speed chase from Fontana to San Bernardino.

Suspect Nicholas Alan Johnson, 32, refused to stop when the police tried to pull him over. Within minutes, he was driving above 100 mph in the wrong way onto the 215.

A deputy aboard a police helicopter then opened fire and struck the vehicle. Johnson leaped out of his vehicle, which crashed into an oncoming SUV carrying three people.

Johnson died after being struck by the helicopter gunfire and then jumping out of his vehicle. Three people were taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.

Police shooting from helicopters are rare sights. According to the Los Angeles Times, the most famous incident occurred in 1982 and involved a bank robbery suspect.
